A few quick weekend links

A great story from KTHV in Little Rock about City Year Little Rock recruiting corps members for next year.

Facebook is supporting Service Nation as “a primary tool for online organization and communication.” City Year is presenting Service Nation along with 3 other organizations: Be the Change, Civic Enterprises, and Points Of Light on September 11th and 12th. Keep an eye on this blog for more updates.

The blog will return with regularly scheduled programing on August 27th. Until then check out some of the blogs linked on the right hand side of the page for updates on City Year, Service Nation and other National Service issues.

If you are interested in serving a City Year in NYC, you can still apply for the 2008-2009 corps. We will be having an open house this Wednesday August 20th at the City Year New York office (20 West 22nd Street, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10010)
Take the 1, F, V, N, or R trains to 23rd St.

If you are interested in attending an open house or would like more information, contact Brie O’Malley at 646-452-3643 or email bomalley at cityyear.org

Also, check out cityyear.org/newyork for more info and to apply online.

Please help support City Year’s Kristi Brown

Kristi Brown, CYNY’s Events and Alumni Service Leader has entered AmEx’s Members Project contest seeking a grant for the City Heroes program. Below is her reason for entering.

…I worked on a Young Heroes team with middle school students in East Harlem last year, I feel invested in the lives of the kids I served and want to contribute to their future City Year experiences. By promoting East Harlem City Heroes through the American Express Member’s Project, I hope to obtain as many resources as possible to ensure the program’s success in its first year and spread awareness about the kids who are giving their time to make a difference.

To vote and learn more about her project here.

Also, in a separate category, check out Jesse Rothstein’s America Needs More Coaches.

Good luck Kristi and Jesse.

City Year supporter competing in the Olympics

Back in April, US Olympic badminton player Howard Bach visited the students of PS133 and spoke to them about his journey to the games in Shanghai.

Howard and his partner Bob Malaythong face the South African team of Chris and Roelof Dednam on Tuesday at 10:55 local time. Good luck Howard and Bob! I’ll post the results here after the match.

You can still send in your cheers at http://www.americascheer.com/.

Peace out Jenkins

Today was the official last day of work for City Year New York’s Kevin Jenkins. Kevin was the Young Heroes program manager for the last two years. After a lengthy summer farewell tour Kevin is moving to Boston to attend Harvard Business School this fall. Good luck and we look forward to hearing of your future successes.
