The corps members and volunteers who attended YOUth for Queens earlier this month, were celebrated by NY1 over the weekend, as the “Queens Person of the Week.” More than 200 corps members, students, and community members joined us for various service projects and performances from local youth. Many City Year New York corps members face one of their most difficult challenges before they ever put on the Red Jacket. Moving to and finding an apartment in New York City can be a very overwhelming experience. Lucky for us, we have 255 experts who have successful navigated this process and wanted to share some advice with next year’s corps as they start looking for housing.

1. #cySummit: Last Tuesday, City Year hosted 500 thought leaders, education stakeholders, and professionals for City Year’s 2012 National Leadership Summit – In School & On Track. The event focused on our efforts to impact the urban education challenge and dramatically increase the graduation pipeline in America. Highlights from the day included:

At our Summit last week we announced our Long-Term Impact strategy and released this animated video to help us share the needs of our students. Please watch this video and please share it with your networks via Facebook and twitter.
3. #CYGiants: On Tuesday evening, District of Columbia Mayor Vincent C. Grey kicked off the City Year Shoulders of Giants celebration at the American History Museum with a quote of inspiration, “If we are going to be a great city and a great nation we need to invest in the educational outcomes of our children.” With that message in mind, we spent the evening focusing on the Leaders, Champions, Students, and Prinicpals that we stand on the shoulders of, to work toward ending the High School drop out crisis. The evening was packed with many things to celebrate including the Eli J. Segal Corps Member of the Year Award, presented to Gabbi Fish of City Year Washington D.C., and hearing from current CYNY Project Leader, Sarah Shutt, who was invited to share whose shoulder’s she stands on:
“My grandfather served our country as a member of the US Air Force for 30 years and my father was a radioman in the US Navy. Their commitment to service inspired me to serve with City Year. I stand on the shoulders of Lieutenant John N. Woodell and Third Class Petty Officer Daniel G. Shutt.”
4. #CYHillDay : While we were in Washington D.C., City Year met with several US House Representatives and members of the US Senate. At City Year New York we would like to thank you to Representatives Jose Serrano, Edolphus Towns, Gary Ackerman, Charles Rangel, Carolyn Maloney, and Nydia M. Velazquez for meeting with us and for your continued support of National Service. We look forward to working with you in the future!

5. USATODAY Report: Dr. Robert Balfanz, whose research on failing schools and the dropout crisis has informed our Whole School, Whole Child service model, released a new study that looks at the under-reporting of chronic absenteeism in our schools. The findings of this report was featured in the New York Times and USA Today.
