Social entrepreneurs can guide candidates

“…Another innovative program, City Year, has engaged more than 800 young people in a full year of community service since opening in San Jose in 1994. City Year deploys tutors, mentors and youth service leaders nationwide. The Mayor’s 2004 Gang Prevention Task Force praised City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley as “a national model” for mobilizing young people in communities, and ranked the program as a top service provider.
Sports4Kids and City Year are among the hundreds of organizations led by social entrepreneurs that are creating real change, and in San Jose they had the active support of elected officials and were recruited to the city by the mayor’s office. With the right amount of political will and public investment at the national level, this approach can be scaled up to address America’s domestic challenges…”
