City Year New York’s opening day recap

Two and a half inches of rain didn’t damper this morning’s opening day ceremony for the 2008-2009 City Year New York corps at NYU’s Skirball Center. The opening day ceremony was sponsored by our friends at Citi Smith Barney not only locally here in New York but also throughout the City Year network. NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein led the corps in taking their City Year pledge and Susan Stern,Chair of the State Commission on National and Community Service for New York, led the corps in their Americorps pledge. We were also joined by Nelson Gaetner from Citi Smith Barney and Jeff Palladino, co-director of Bronx Guild HS.

Our friends at NY1 sent over a reporter who filed this story and video…thanks for the kind words Chancellor Klein! P.S.–Our corps members are aged 17-24.

Thursday morning the CYNY corps attended three morning show tapings and spread the good word about opening day and national service.

A small group of corps and staff attended a taping of The Mike and Juliet Show. Mike Jerrick, filed this video on his blog. This is a fun one! Whatever you do…Don’t be jealous of Dan McDermott’s rocks.

If you watched the Today Show on NBC than you saw two City Year sites represented. We were at the NBC studios in Rockefeller Plaza and City Year Detroit was out at Campus Martius with Al Roker and Ann Curry.

Check out this video from the CBS Early Show…see if you can spot your favorite CYNY corps member in the background!

Stay tuned for some pictures from today…will post on Monday.
