“Why I Serve” – Chris Duru

I spent my entire life calling a Bronx housing project home.  I grew up in the New York Public School system. Where I’m from opportunity is few and far in between, so when mine came I had every intention of taking it and running.  It wasn’t until later that I realized that the opportunities I did receive were the result of individuals who put the needs of the community ahead of their own.  So many people who grow up in underprivileged neighborhoods and achieve success never come back.  They funnel their talents and resources into the corporate sector, and the cycle of oppression continues.  Someone has to stay, someone has to give back.  This is why I serve.
