Five Things Friday: SAVE…

1. Save Americorps – Take Action. Save AmeriCorps by calling your Representative NOW.
Right now the U.S. House of Representatives is debating legislation that would cut $100 billion from the federal budget. The bill, H.R. 1, eliminates funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service and AmeriCorps. This drastic act will immediately remove all AmeriCorps members from schools, after-care programs, health centers, food banks and thousands of other community and faith-based organizations. This is very serious news.
AmeriCorps helps to provide solutions to some of our most pressing social problems. With essential support from AmeriCorps, City Year engages more than 1,750 young adults in full-time service to help turn around high-need schools and get students back on track to graduation. These diverse young City Year AmeriCorps members help to close the education achievement gap by working directly with at-risk children throughout the school year.

2. Save the Date –

3. Save Kids from Boredom –

CYNY is doing just this next week as we host Camp City Year for elementary school students in four locations and Heroes Summit for middle school students in three locations during NYC students’ winter breaks. This is just one way we can make sure our students are engaging their minds and staying active in a positive environment, even when school is out. Stay tuned for updates all next week, and if you’d like more information on volunteering for either, please contact Allison Szutu ( for Heroes Summit information and Leah Hoffman (lhoffman10@cityyear.0rg) for Camp City Year information.
4. Sav(or) The Memories

The CYNY Alumni Board hosted a successful and classy first fundraiser of the season with their Wine-Tasting event at Moore Brothers Wine Company on Wednesday evening.  Over 60 alumni, staff, family and friends attended, and to accompany the delicious wine donated by Moore Brothers, they ate delicious foods donated by Almond Restaurant, L’artusi, and Bep. 5. Save Room For Fun –

Communications Manager Ian Rees visited his buddy school, PS/MS 57 in East  Harlem, for their Valentine’s Day Event complete with a  face painting station, a freeze dance station, an appreciation station, a make-a-vase station, and to accompany the last, a make-a-flower station, among other activities. Fantastic work, team!
