Recognizing Excellence at JHS 13

The first JHS 13 Award Ceremony took a lot of planning and nervous energy, but in the end it turned out to be an event that was well received and appreciated. The parent turnout was better than many other parent engagement events, and it was apparent that the parents were proud to see their children cross the stage to receive their academic honors and appreciations for attendance.

With almost sixty people in the room, the ceremony flowed with opening greetings from the principal, Mr. Jacob Michelman, and then several City Year corps members showcasing their talent. The parents were pleasantly surprised by the musical selections and poetic performances. As the children’s names were called, cameras flashed and ecstatic parents erupted into an applause. We even had the mother of one student, Anderson, in tears as he was appreciated.

The Principal and staff were quite appreciative and sentimental about the event that took place as they made note of the parents that supported their children by being there that night. All in all it was a successful event that can and should be repeated. It was great showing the students that their accomplishments are recognized.
