Visitor’s Spotlight: Council Member Van Bramer

Today’s Guest Blogger is Maris Goodstein, Chief of Staff, City Year New York

Happy Wednesday and Spring to all the loyal readers out there!  I am excited to jump in as a guest blogger today to let everyone know about our visit earlier this week with Council Member Van Bramer.

Council Member Van Bramer joined us Monday morning at City Year partner school IS 204, in Long Island City, Queens.  Council Member Van Bramer, who has been in office since Jan 2010, is already a supporter of City Year New York and we were excited to be able to show off our work.

Corps member Melissa Shah gives Council Member Van Bramer an overview of the City Year programs at IS 204

Melissa and Matthew, two Corps Members on the IS 204 team, gave a great tour of the school, highlighting their team’s work with the students on English and Math – especially as the students have ELA testing coming up.  We were lucky to run into Assistant Principal Furlong in the hallway, who talked about how the City Year team is invaluable to the school – supporting in-class work, after school, parent initiatives, assemblies and more!  Thank you Assistant Principal Furlong, we are excited to be a strong part of the IS 204 community.  We also visited Ms. Scalici’s 8th grade math class to check out the students Melissa works with every day.  As Melissa and Matthew explained to Council Member Van Bramer, the team also supports attendance and behavior initiatives at IS 204. In fact at I.S. 204, students coached in attendance by City Year have increased their attendance rate from 77% to 85%. Great job IS 204 Corps Members!

It was such a pleasure to spend the morning with Council Member Van Bramer, who was impressed with City Year and asked a lot of great questions.  It was also a blast to hear about how he is a graduate of the NYC public school system, and is obviously really invested in the education of his constituents!
