3. City Years National Leadership Summit: Last week hundreds of City Year corps members, staff and champions descended on Washington DC to discuss the role national service can play in ending the high school dropout crisis. Please check out this blog post Links We Like – City Year National Leadership Summit Edition for a full recap of the summits events and speakers.
4. Community Service Days:
The 8th Annual “One Harlem” Service Celebration was a success last weekend with 470 volunteers who participated in transformational service at four service sites, including their hub-site, PS 38. In addition, they were able to be part of inspiring morning and closing programs, as well as a Block Party that defied the rain to engage CBOs, vendors, and entertainers from around the Harlem community.

“LICense to Serve” in Long Island City will be TOMORROW, May 14. Beginning at 9am, the City Year New York Corps will host the 5th annual LICense to Serve Community Service Day. This year, 150 volunteers will come together in Long Island City, Queens for a day of revitalizing and celebrating this community. The morning will include painting, landscaping and light construction projects at local schools and community organizations. In the afternoon, volunteers and community members will gather to celebrate the accomplishments of the day through a block party which will include community resources, food and lots of fun. For more information, please e-mail LICensetoserve@gmail.com or call Vashti Valerius at 646.546.6486.
5. Corps Holiday Card: Every year the City Year New York Associate Board sells a City Year Holiday Card as a fundraiser to support the service of our corps. This year, for the first time ever, we asked corps member to design the card that will be sent out next December. The members of our Associate Board had the very difficult job of selecting one card from the more than 40 cards that included photos, digital art and handmade artwork. We would like to thank everyone who participated and congratulate Molly Robison of the MS 424 Alcoa team in the South Bronx for having her design selected for next year’s card. Her hand-drawn and painted winning card is below:
