Basic Training Retreat Recap

This time last week City Year New York was packing for our Basic Training Retreat at Iroquois Springs camp in Rock Hill, NY. Our site spent last Thursday and Friday there with near perfect weather and the outdoors in our back yard. Corps members had finally been placed on their teams for the year so we used this time to build strong teams by focusing on 4 of the 10 City Year values: Teamwork, Inclusivity, Empathy, and Ubuntu. Each value was explored through team buildeing games, a low ropes course, an inspiring Ubuntu session, a talent show, and our first unity rally of the year.

For the today’s Wordless Wednesday pictures, check out the album on our Facebook page.

East New York, Brooklyn's PS 213 team posed for a quick team picture before they jumped on the low ropes course.

The entire East Harlem zone power greeted the rest of the City Year New York community into meal time.

Teams had to swing from one small platform to another even smaller platform full of their teammates. Yes, they all made it over AND stayed on for 30 seconds!

A room full of Ubuntu. During this inspiring session, corps members and staff found connections with someone they hadn't met or spoken to yet.

"They have spirit! Yes they do! They have spirit and some awesome dance moves!" Believe it or not, this break dancing sequence is a part of Newtown High School's team chant.
