First Ever AmEx/CYNY Mentoring Program Launches

Last week, more than 70 people filled a room at the American Express Tower on Wall Street for the inaugural American Express/CYNY Mentoring Program Kickoff event.

Mentor/mentee pairs are revealed.

Earlier in the year, applications were submitted by American Express employees interested in being a mentor and City Year corps and senior corps members interested in gaining a mentor for the remainder of the service year.  At this exciting morning event, the pairs were finally introduced, but not without some breakfast and team-builders first.

A group of American Express mentors and City Year mentees describe their definition to a made-up word in one of the teambuilding activities.

The group also got the chance to learn about each other’s organization – City Year staff and senior corps heard about Serve2Gether, one of American Express’  internal volunteer programs, and American Express employees learned about our critical work in schools.

Hugo Martinez-Bernardino, corps member on the Microsoft Newtown High School team, tells the group why he chose to give a year with City Year.

Thank you so much to Meredith Hahn, Director of Community Service, and Anthony Sanchez, Philanthropy Coordinator, both of American Express, for coordinating the space logistics and helping to think through the success of the program and the Kickoff itself.

Thanks also to Itai Dinour, Executive Director at CYNY, for joining us and explaining City Year’s mission. Thank you to Halle Scotese and Allie Clarke for your support as well.

And finally, a huge thank you to all the American Express mentors and City Year New York mentees for your enthusiasm! We look forward to seeing what the next few months bring for everyone by way of professional development!
