Today’s guest blogger is City Year New York’s Alumni Board Co-Chair, Hiro Sato.
Over the weekend of November 1st-3rd, Myself and Kristy Brown , co-chairs of the City Year New York Alumni Board, attended the National Alumni Advisory Board (NAAB) retreat at City Year Headquarters in Boston, MA. The purpose of this retreat was to connect the NAAB with City Year’s senior leadership and continue to build excitement for the alumni role in accelerating City Year’s Long-Term Impact Goal (LTI).
We kicked off the event with a welcome dinner on Friday and got down to business early Saturday morning with an inspirational speech from our CEO, Michael Brown, who shared with us his vision for City Year and the course of actions we need to take in order to make it a reality.
Throughout the weekend, we had the opportunity to discuss best practices and exchange ideas from alumni board chairs across different sites. It was very informative to hear what other sites were doing to support their corps and alums.
Another highlight of the retreat was the panel session where leaders of other alumni organizations such as Teach for America (TFA) and Bentley University shared their experiences and insights on getting their alumni engaged. For example, all panelists echoed the importance of providing opportunities catered specific to City Year alumni and bringing back that special connection which allows alumni to reminisce about the time and successes they had while serving at City Year.
To close out the retreat, we had a bit of fun on Saturday night as we dined and danced on the “Spirit” cruise while taking in the glimmering lights of Boston.
The CYNY Alumni Board will be rolling out initiatives and events through the e-newsletters as well on social media to support the corps and alums. Some upcoming events are the Brown Bag panel, 18 minute networking and Alumni & Friends Fundraiser. If you’re not currently receiving the alumni newsletter, please make sure your registered on the alumni website under City Year New York and if you’re interested in getting involved in any of these events, please reach out to our Event and Alumni Project Leader Susan Varghese.
So stay tuned for some exciting news and we look forward to seeing you at these events soon!
