Today’s guest blogger is Corps Member, Alisa Dwyer, from the PS 83 Bain & Company team in Harlem.
On Thursday, January 30th the students in PS83’s City Year After School program participated in an afternoon of fun activities provided by our corporate team sponsor, Bain & Company. Last year Bain provided our students with a wonderful Health and Wellness Fair that allowed students to participate in yoga, jump roping and learning how to check their heart rates. This year our “Bainees” rallied together to create a World Cultures Fair in which students “travelled” to different countries to learn about the traditional art, dances, food and festivities of the various regions.
Comprising of Russia, China, India, and Brazil, our friends at Bain & Company encouraged students to share their own experiences and knowledge of each country and culture throughout each lesson. My group began in Russia, where students learned how to create and decorate nesting dolls. While in China, students shared insights on the festivities surrounding Chinese New Year and practiced their calligraphy by creating chunlian, a traditional New Year’s decoration. Next, we ventured to India, where students discussed the Bollywood industry and practiced bhangra, or Indian folk dancing. Our last destination was Brazil. Here students learned about the exciting festival of Carnival and created their very own feathered masks.
At the end of this very busy and fun-filled day, students were excited to share out about their experiences from the day and expressed excitement for next year’s event! The City Year team at PS83 wishes to thank Bain & Company for another successful and engaging event! Your hard work and dedication to our students is much appreciated and has helped to expand their cultural knowledge and understanding!
